Trademarks are valuable business assets in Uzbekistan because the law grants an exclusive right to use the mark and to prevent others from using confusingly similar signs. However, that exclusivity is only maintained if the owner renews the certificate at the appropriate time. The Republic of Uzbekistan regulates trademarks through the Law On trademarks, service marks and appellations of origin of goods (Law No. 267‑II of 30 August 2001, as amended 2022). The law provides a 10‑year validity term for a trademark certificate counted from the filing date and allows indefinite renewals for additional 10‑year periods. Failing to renew on time causes the certificate to expire and, once the grace period passes, there is no way to reinstate it. This article explains the deadlines, fees and procedures for renewing a trademark in Uzbekistan and answers common questions.
How often must a trademark be renewed?
Under Article 21 of the trademark law, the certificate for a trademark or an appellation of origin is valid for 10 years from the date of filing the application. Article 22 allows the certificate holder to extend the term for additional ten‑year periods by submitting a renewal request within the last year of validity. The law therefore permits indefinite renewals, provided the owner files on time and pays the state fee. The trademark must also remain in genuine use; if the mark is not used continuously for the last three years of its validity, any interested person can petition a court to terminate the certificate early.
Renewal fees
Fees for intellectual‑property procedures in Uzbekistan are calculated in Reference Calculation Value (RCV) units. The RCV is periodically adjusted by the government and is used for taxes, state fees and IP charges. For non‑residents the state duties are 16 times higher than for residents. Law‑firm sources give an approximate conversion table showing that renewing one class of a trademark costs about 24 RCV (around US $650) and each additional class costs 2 RCV (about US $60). Since RCV amounts fluctuate, applicants should verify the exact official fee at the time of filing.
| Action | State duty (non‑resident) | Notes |
| Renewal of one class | 24 RCV (≈ US $650) | Payable to renew for another 10‑year term. |
| Each additional class | 2 RCV (≈ US $60) | For multi‑class marks; multiply by number of extra classes. |
| Late renewal penalty | +50 % of the pending fee | Charged when renewing during the 6‑month grace period. |
